I'm looking for a few new books to read this summer. I had several books on my list, but since I will only be teaching ELAR and social studies next year... that list has gotten smaller. Do you have any to recommend? I'll post my lists here, and if you've already read one I'm thinking about reading, please posts your thoughts on the book or add your own!! I'd love to hear what you have to say! :)

Hi! I have read both Reading Essentials and Comprehension Connections. Both are great. Comprehension Connections is full of great lessons for introducing reading strategies. I have not read Reading Essentials in a long time but from what I remember it is focused on good reading instruction - independent reading with conferences etc.

I belong to a very large yahoo group on the daily 5 and we are doing a book study on it this summer and we have people participation from all over the United States and other countries too! I just got my copy in the mail from Amazon and I can't wait to read it!
I am starting Debbie Diller's Math Work Stations. I also reading "How's It Going?: A Practical Guide to Conferring with Student Writers" by

Out of the books you've read, any recommendations?
I loved both Debbie Miller books (Reading with Meaning and Teaching with Intention)... Reading with Meaning is for a lower grade, but it is still absolutely full of wonderful ideas on how to teach reading and have your kids truly take ownership. I would really say that this was my cornerstone for building my reading instruction - it really helped me with all the other books I read on that list, even though they may have had more details on how to teach a specific strategy.
ReplyDeleteDaily 5 and CAFE are great books, but I've learned that you really have to make it your own: you really can't teach it exactly like they have it in the book becuase you've got to look at your schedule and your kids to truly make the most of them.
The Book Whisperer was amazing... if you haven't read it, read it!!! The author is a 6th grade teacher in Keller, TX (not far from here), but you could absolutely use her ideas in any grade level. I read this book crazy fast after I bought it last summer and found that it made SO much sense. I just fell in love with her philosophies.

My district requires use to use the Daily 5! I haven't read the full book, but feel I know enough from doing research online:)
